Aretousa was a Nymph. Persecuted by her lover, Alphios River, she went to Sicily where the goddess Artemis turned her into a spring. Alphios visited her and from his waters passed the head of the Nymph decorated with dolphins. This scene is depicted in the coins of Syracusians.

The city streets are filled with dancers from all over the world, with the intention to share with the crowd their culture and traditions.

Beside the city of Lefkada, events take place throughout the island, such as the wedding of Lefkas, the wine fests, religious events, and craft related fests, such as threshing, and the representation of the local ceramics manufacturing.
